India's monsoon season is entering a highly active phase, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue widespread warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several regions through August 16. This intense activity arrives in a month that was initially projected by the IMD to experience 'below normal' rainfall—around 94% of the long-period average—highlighting the increasingly volatile nature of extreme, localized weather events.
The Himalayan and Northern Alert
The most immediate concerns are focused on the vulnerable terrains of Northwest India. The IMD expects fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh through August 16.
For states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, which have already absorbed significant water this season, these persistent showers drastically elevate the risk of sudden landslides, mudslides, and flash floods. The IMD has urged local authorities to "take action" and advised residents and tourists to avoid non-essential travel in hilly areas.
Adjacent plains are not spared; Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, and East Uttar Pradesh are also slated for scattered, heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms. East Rajasthan has been specifically flagged for heavy to very heavy rain in the early part of this week.
Eastern and Northeastern Deluge
The weather system is pulling immense moisture into Eastern India. Odisha is on high alert, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected continuously through August 15.
In the Northeast, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are bracing for severe weather. The IMD notes that these states will experience an escalation in rainfall intensity toward the end of the week, with isolated "very heavy" rainfall projected for August 15 and 16. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will also see widespread daily showers.
Central and Western Outlook
Central India remains in the active monsoon path. Fairly widespread rainfall is likely over East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh through August 16, with isolated heavy falls expected to trigger localized waterlogging in urban areas.
On the west coast, Konkan & Goa and the Gujarat Region will see sustained showers, though the intensity is expected to be relatively scattered compared to the northern and eastern fronts. Maritime authorities have also cautioned fishermen against venturing into parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, where squally weather is anticipated.
