JAIPUR — In a powerful display of resilience, over 100 hearing and speech-impaired students staged a silent protest outside the Government Seth Anandilal Poddar Senior Secondary School in Jaipur on Wednesday. Armed with placards, written messages, and Indian Sign Language (ISL), the students took to the streets to bring attention to the severe mismanagement, unsafe infrastructure, and alleged harassment within the institution.
The unprecedented demonstration prompted immediate action from the Rajasthan Education Department, resulting in the suspension of the school's principal and the initiation of disciplinary actions against other staff members.
The Breaking Point: A Collapsing Ceiling
The unrest had been brewing for months due to ignored complaints, but the tipping point occurred when a piece of plaster fell from a classroom ceiling, striking and injuring a student. Refusing to return to the unsafe building, students left their classrooms and gathered at the campus gate, determined to have their grievances heard.
A Long List of Grievances
The Seth Anandilal Poddar School, which houses over 550 students (including 282 hostel residents), has been plagued by a severe lack of basic amenities. Through their silent protest, the students highlighted multiple alarming issues:
Dilapidated Infrastructure: Cracked walls, unsafe classrooms, and a generally deteriorating building.
Poor Sanitation and Nutrition: Unhygienic toilets, blocked sewer lines, a severe shortage of drinking water, and substandard food served in the hostel.
Extortion Allegations: Shockingly, students claimed they were forced to pay illegal fees just to speak to their parents on the phone or to be escorted to the hospital.
Lack of Trained Educators: The students pointed out a significant shortage of teachers proficient in Indian Sign Language (ISL), severely hindering their education.
Harassment: Protesters also accused a male staff member of harassing female students, adding a grave safety concern to the list of administrative failures.
Swift Disciplinary Action
As the protest gained momentum and media attention, authorities from the Education Department arrived to inspect the premises. Finding the students' complaints to be genuine, the district education officer submitted a report recommending immediate disciplinary measures.
Principal Bharat Joshi was suspended with immediate effect. Additionally, a teacher and a Class IV employee were placed under Awaiting Posting Orders (APO). Vice Principal Reshma Batra has been temporarily handed charge of the institution.
To ensure lasting improvements, the Education Department has constituted a special committee tasked with examining the school's infrastructure, sanitation, and overall facilities to propose long-term solutions.
Political Leaders Offer Support
The protest also drew the attention of political figures. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot visited the school to meet with the protesting students. He emphasized that institutions serving deaf and speech-impaired children require specialized attention, superior infrastructure, and dedicated facilities.
The students of Seth Anandilal Poddar School have proven that voices do not need to be spoken to be heard. Their silent outcry has not only exposed the apathy of the educational administration but has also forced a necessary reckoning within Rajasthan's special education system.
